The PGY2 Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Residency Program at Allegheny General Hospital was established in 2012 and accredited by ASHP in 2021. The program provides an environment to enhance pharmacotherapy skills in a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings. Comprehensive training includes experiences with infectious diseases consultation services, multidisciplinary HIV clinic, antimicrobial stewardship program, pharmacokinetics service, and microbiology. PGY2 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency training to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives for advanced practice areas. Residents who successfully complete PGY2 residency programs are prepared for advanced patient care or other specialized positions, and board certification in the advanced practice area of infectious diseases (BCIDP).
Core Rotations
Orientation (5 weeks)
Infectious Diseases 1, 2, and 3 (4-6 weeks, each)
Antimicrobial Stewardship 1 and 2 (4-6 weeks, each)
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Clinic 1 and 2 (4-6 weeks, each)
HIV Clinic 2 can be selected as a longitudinal 4-hours/week experience over the second half of the year
Microbiology (1-2 weeks)
On-Call/Pharmacokinetics/Staffing (Longitudinal)
Practice Management & Practice Leadership (Longitudinal)
Participation in Antimicrobial P&T Subcommittee and other work groups
Presentations and Teaching Conference (Longitudinal)
The specific program for each resident varies based upon the resident’s goals, interests, and previous experience. However, all residents are required to complete the above core rotations. Various elective rotations are available to provide flexibility in pursuing individual goals. The resident may choose to complete an elective rotation in one or more of the core rotation practice areas or choose another practice area:
Any of the core required rotations (2-4 weeks)

Clinical Precepting (4 weeks)
Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplant (2 weeks)
Solid Organ Transplant (2-4 weeks)

About PGY2 Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Residency; AHN Allegheny General Hospital
Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) is an academic medical center serving Pittsburgh and the surrounding five-state area. The hospital annually admits more than 24,000 patients, and has nearly 800 physicians and approximately 5,000 employees that share AGH's commitment to excellence in patient care, medical education and research. AGH is the flagship tertiary care hospital in the Allegheny Health Network (AHN).
The AGH Department of Pharmacy provides on-site outpatient pharmacy services and 24-hour inpatient comprehensive pharmacy services utilizing a decentralized, computerized unit-dose drug distribution system and intravenous admixture programs in a recently remodeled pharmacy. Other pharmacy services include drug information, computerized inventory control and procurement systems, integrated drug use review, and quality improvement.
The AGH Pharmacy Residency Programs consists of 20 residents within nine-different residency programs. PGY1 programs include Acute Care and Ambulatory Focused residencies. PGY2 programs include Ambulatory Care, Cardiology, Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, Infectious Diseases, and Oncology residencies. A combined PGY1-PGY2 Health-System Ph...armacy Administration Residency Program with MPH at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health is also available. Residents receive a stipend of $48,400 for PGY1 and $52,000 for PGY2 with medical, prescription, dental, vision, disability, and life-insurance benefits. Thirteen paid days off are provided during the residency year outside of days to attend approved conferences.
