The goal of the Rush University Medical Center (RUMC) solid organ transplant pharmacy residency program is to provide the resident with a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of pharmacotherapy in the transplant population. The resident will be exposed to multiple transplant populations within an interdisciplinary setting to allow them to become an independent clinician. The resident will be able to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills within solid organ transplant pharmacotherapy through active participation in required and elective patient care learning experiences and a multitude of other learning opportunities. In addition, the resident will learn how to appropriately review, prepare, and dispense transplant medications in a safe and efficient manner. Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to independently conduct practice based research and lead practice based quality initiatives.

This residency program has a focus on kidney, liver and pancreas transplantation, with elective opportunities available in heart/lung transplant, pediatric transplant and transplant quality improvement initiatives. The resident will participate in both inpatient and outpatient clinical care activities. The resident will also participate in an overnight on-call program. The goal of this residency program is to develop strong and independent pharmacy practitioners who become integral members of the solid organ transplant multidisciplinary team.

This partnership with the Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Care Network will be a world-class intensive care and surgical unit for deceased organ donors, staffed with leading clinicians and allied multidisciplinary services to optimize the impact of every organ donation and save more lives. The Department of Pharmacy has advanced technology including CPOE, smart pumps, IV robot, and remote verification technology. The Pharmacy Department is fully committed to teaching and research in its affiliation with several nearby colleges of pharmacy.

The resident is expected to have successfully completed an ASHP-accredited (or pre-candidate status) PGY-1 residency. Other requirements include: PharmD from an ACPE-accredited college of pharmacy, PhorCAS application, curriculum vitae, letter of intent, 3 letters of recommendations, academic transcripts, and eligibility for Illinois pharmacist licensure.

The practice model is such that it can provide clinical services to patients 24 hours/day, 7 days/week. Pharmacy residency programs have been in place for over 40 years and currently consists of 10 PGY1 residents and 7 PGY2 residents.
