Residency Program Overview
Program Purpose
PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Program: The purpose of the PGY-1 pharmacy residency program is to build upon the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY-2) pharmacy residency training.
This manual has been developed for the pharmacy residents of Howard University Hospital (HUH) PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Programs to provide information on policies, procedures, benefits and other elements that may directly affect a resident completing our program. Please read the manual and keep it for future reference. Questions regarding the residency manual may be addressed with the Residency Program Director (RPD). Note: Howard University Hospital may revise its policies and procedures at any time whenever deemed necessary. Residents will be informed of changes accordingly.

Program Description
Howard University Hospital provides an ASHP-accredited Post-Graduate Year One (PGY-1) pharmacy residency program. Residents pursuing a PGY-1 pharmacy residency are provided the opportunity to further enhance their clinical skills beyond their professional pharmacy degree program. The 12-month residency program enhances general competencies in managing medication-use systems and supports optimal pharmacotherapy for patients in various care settings and with a broad range of disease states.
The goal of the residency program is to create independent pharmacy practitioners who have the skills necessary to practice pharmacy in a variety of practice settings. Residents work towards this goal through the following set of skill developments:
Gain the skills and abilities necessary to independently and competently optimize pharmacotherapy outcomes in various settings.
Develop critical thinking and effective communication skills.
Provide optimal pharmacotherapy and improve patient safety as an integral member of a multi-disciplinary team.
Instill confidence and improve leadership skills by expanding knowledge base and through education of other health-care professionals and patients.
Promote professional development through continued education and self-evaluation
