The Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency at Henry Ford Hospital is a 12-month, structured PGY-2 residency. This PGY-2 pharmacy residency program builds upon Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY-1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in the specialized area of ambulatory care practice.
This residency will provide opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care. Residents will work alongside clinical pharmacists in both the ambulatory and inpatient environments allowing for pharmacist mentoring and modeling as well as for integration into the collaborative practice model with close physician and patient interactions. Residents will have the opportunity to enhance foundational skills obtained in PGY-1 residency via interaction with the center’s current PGY-2 residents in critical care, infectious disease, hematology/oncology and solid organ transplant, PGY-1 residents and longitudinal advanced pharmacy practice (LAPP) students.
Residents who successfully complete this PGY-2 pharmacy residency will be prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification in ambulatory care. Completion of this residency is intended to create individuals that are qualified to practice as a clinical pharmacy specialist in the ambulatory care setting and/or become faculty members at a School of Pharmacy or Medicine. This residency will provide residents with opportunities to conceptualize, integrate, and transform accumulated experiences and knowledge into skill, competence, and confidence in providing safe, efficient, and cost-effective patient care.

However, activities for these assessed components of the program do not occur during a fixed scheduled time because they occur throughout the program.
Residents should use part of their Academic/Admin time to work on these elements in addition to using this time for other tasks needed for scheduled learning experiences). Moreover, there will be times when residents may need to devote time on these elements that conflict with a scheduled learning experience (e.g., teaching or assessing PharmD students).
