Purpose
PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.
Overview
IU Health West Hospital is a rapidly growing community-based hospital that serves the suburban region west of Indianapolis.
The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program at IU Health West Hospital emphasizes the development of advanced knowledge and application of pharmacotherapeutics in the provision of multi-disciplinary, quality patient care. This program cultivates the skills of practice management and education and the professional attitudes of self-evaluation, self-improvement, and accountability. The successful resident will demonstrate a desire to learn, sincere interest in the profession, and dedication to achieving all outcomes of the residency.
Rotations
Each PGY1 resident is required to successfully complete twelve months of residency. The resident’s rotation preferences will be considered when making and adjusting the rotation schedule.

Adult Critical Care
Emergency Medicine
Infectious Diseases and Antimicrobial Stewardship
Outpatient Oncology
Pediatrics
Longitudinal Rotations:

Medication use evaluation
Personal practice management/Leadership development
Infectious Disease and Antimicrobial Stewardship II
*Other elective opportunities may be coordinated based on Resident’s interests and preceptor availability.
Residency Completion
Residency Requirements
Indiana Pharmacist license within 90 days of hire
Successful completion of all required rotations
Earn “Achieved for Residency” (ACHR) status on at least 80% of all PGY1 Residency Objectives.*
Residency Project includes poster presentation, final formal presentation, and manuscript
System-wide Medication Use Evaluation
Formal medical staff presentation
Completion of PGY1 Resident Portfolio, which details the resident’s learning opportunities*

The qualified applicant must have the ability to possess a Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from an accredited college of pharmacy and be eligible for Indiana licensure by the start of the residency year. Additional requirements:
