Welcome to AdventHealth for Children’s PGY2 Pediatric Pharmacy Specialty Residency Program! Our residency program offers two full-time, 12-month positions with an intensive curriculum accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). The purpose of our residency program is to provide residents with a learning environment that will enhance critical thinking skills, facilitate independent practice, and foster leadership skills necessary to provide specialized, patient-focused care for pediatric patients. It is our goal to help residents optimize drug therapy to improve patient outcomes and ultimately become confident Pediatric Clinical Specialists on a multidisciplinary health care team.
AdventHealth for Children is a 220-bed acute care teaching hospital, including a 102-bed Level III NICU, 16-bed Level I PICU, 12-bed Hematology/Oncology Unit, 6-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, 8-bed Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, 44-bed General Medical/Surgical Unit, 16-bed Procedural Sedation Unit, 10-bed CVICU, 16-bed ED and Central Florida’s only Pediatric Renal Transplant, Bone Marrow Transplant, and Liver Transplant programs. AdventHealth for Children received a $10 million contribution in 2007 from Walt Disney World towards an expansion project which was completed in early 2011. AdventHealth for Children is also a recipient of Disney’s Team of Heroes philanthropic outreach program which delivers comfort and inspiration to families with children facing serious illness by reimagining the patient and family experience in children’s hospitals.
AdventHealth for Children serves as a major tertiary facility in Orlando, Florida, and is affiliated with seven AdventHealth campuses for adult patients in Central Florida, including Level II NICUs and Pediatric EDs. Applicant should have a Doctor of Pharmacy degree and be in the process of completing a PGY-1 pharmacy residency or have the equivalent experience. Eligibility for Florida licensure is essential for fulfilling the requirements of the application process. Applicants must be participants in the National Matching Services and the PhORCAS. The following application materials must be submitted by the deadline: curriculum vitae, 3 letters of recommendation utilizing the PhORCAS template (1 from clinical pharmacist, 1 from Residency Program Director), transcripts from all colleges of pharmacy attended, and letter of intent discussing the motivation for pursuing pediatric specialty training including goals for the next 2-5 years.

The AdventHealth Orlando Pharmacy Department is automated with decentralized unit-based dispensing cabinets throughout all patient care areas. The department has a USP 797 compliant clean room which provides sterile product services to patient care areas. The hospital is equipped with computerized physician order entry and utilizes an electronic medication administration record. The pharmacy offers a wide variety of clinical services in collaboration with healthcare teams for the cure, arrest, and prevention of disease and/or symptoms of disease. Members of the clinical pharmacy staff provide decentralized pharmaceutical care and patient education throughout AdventHealth Orlando every day to assure safe, accurate, and cost-effective medication therapy. Pharmacists, technicians, and residents work with institutional stakeholders, physicians, and allied professionals to improve the long-term health of acute care patients and the community. Our primary mission is to provide quality pharmaceutical care to improve the patient's quality of life while providing support for caregivers. As part of multidisciplinary teams, we share the responsibility of monitoring responses to drug therapy and optimizing care to improve patient outcomes. The Department of Pediatric Pharmacy distributive services consist of:• Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) review • Patient medication profile review • Detect and prevent prescribing and transcription errors • Drug distribution • Sterile IV preparation • Compounding medications • Medication verficiation for restocking automated dispensing cabinets (ADC) The Department of Pediatric Pharmacy has a Clinical Program which provides of the following services:• Patient care rounds • Therapeutic drug monitoring with automatic pharmacy consult services for vancomycin and aminoglycosides• Parenteral nutrition • Review all medication profiles for potential interventions • Dose adjustments for renal and hepatic function • Advise the initiation, discontinuation, or alteration of therapies • Monitor and prevent adverse drug reactions • Provide drug information and education to physicians, nurses, patients, and other ancillary staff • Review microbial laboratory test results and recommend altering or streamlining antibiotics • Convert IV medications to enteral formulations when appropriate • Asthma education and prescription discharge and warfarin patient counseling • Team member for core committees and evidence-based guideline development • Write/review medication-related policies and procedures and order set development • Review medications for addition to the Formulary • Precept pharmacy students and residents • Participate in IRB-approved research projects
