Kaweah Health Medical Center is a 613-bed not-for-profit community based teaching facility anchored by Kaweah Health Medical Center, its 480 bed, Level III trauma center located in Visalia, CA. Our eight-campus facility includes the largest acute care hospital in Tulare County, Kaweah Health Medical Center. In addition, an expansive rural health clinic system of 5 outpatient clinics giving patients in rural communities better access to healthcare in Tulare County. Kaweah Health offers six accredited graduate medical education programs allowing for interdisciplinary care and communication to increase the quality of care delivered to our patients. Kaweah Health Graduate Medical Education (GME) Family Practice Residency program provides family medicine services at our Tulare clinic. Physician training practice areas include anesthesia, emergency medicine, family medicine, surgery, psychiatry and a transitional year program.
Purpose Statement:
The Kaweah Health Medical Center PGY1 pharmacy residency program builds on the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e. BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.
Kaweah Health Medical Center is a community-based teaching hospital committed to producing PGY1 trained clinical pharmacists that exhibit the core characteristics of leadership, evidence-based practice, and service to the community. The PGY1 residency will train pharmacists in professional practice and management activities where they will gain in-depth experience leading to advanced practice skills and knowledge of the integration of hospital pharmacy services with the comprehensive needs of individual practice settings. Upon completion, residents will be prepared to practice as a general clinical practitioner in an acute care setting or pursue further focused specialized training (PGY2/fellowship).
Program Overview & Learning Experiences:
The Kaweah Health Medical Center PGY1 residency program offers training experiences in a variety of acute care and practice leadership settings. Each month the resident will rotate through a variety of patient care settings where they will have the opportunity to enhance their ability to provide safe and effective pharmaceutical care while being mentored by a clinical pharmacist in that area. Additionally, longitudinal opportunities designed for the resident to complete over 52 week timeframe, allows opportunities to further enhance new skill sets.

Residents receive Medical, Dental and Vision benefits effective day one of residency, 22 days paid time off, approved leave and travel reimbursement to CSHP Seminar, ASHP Midyear and Western States Residency Conference, and $500 relocation assistance bonus.

Kaweah Health Medical Center is home to da Vinci Si robotic surgery, a new endo-urology suite, a state of the art endovascular operating room, and 64 CT radiological technology. The main medical center is a wireless environment offering healthcare providers access to Electronic Medical Records, ELMER electronic notes, Citrix interface from home or office and integration with iPad and other tablet technology.
