Reports to the Ophthalmology Outpatient Manager and demonstrates competency in all duties typically performed by an Orthoptist. Incumbent analyzes and treats patients with dysfunctions of binocularity and/or ocular motility. Examines patients to diagnose and treat abnormal eye motor movements, partial vision, determination of presence of fusion. triage patients in the absence of the ophthalmologist. supervise first and second year ophthalmology residents and fellows. prepare and conduct training programs for certified orthoptists. develop teaching outlines, plans and instruction procedures. evaluate progress through practical application and tests. Organize vision screening in community schools. Provide training to local pediatricians interested in learning about orthoptic services. Compile data on patients in clinical trials. prepare manuscripts for publications and present design, scope and/or results of research projects. Provide assistance to clinic administrator in the evaluation of clinic technical support staff.

Maintains appropriate inventory of all departmental supplies and equipment
Prepares instruments, equipment and supplies in an organized and timely manner
Understands the relationship between various pieces of clinical equipment and the associated age related needs
Participates in professional development
Creates and maintains the sterile field
Demonstrates knowledge of sterilization and high-level disinfection processes
Effectively orients and trains new staff in the use of common instruments and equipment
Follows the departmental instrument decontamination policy
Effectively utilizes knowledge of sterilization principles to correctly wrap or package items for sterilization
Maintains assigned work area in a clean and organized condition
Monitors outdated medications and checks crash cart
Captures supply charges on encounter forms used for procedures
Assists with patient and pharmacy telephone calls and prescription refills
Provides educational materials to patients in a timely manner
Collaborates with all members of the health care team to document, assess, intervene, advocate and evaluate patients
Accurately performs initial assessment and admission history to meet unit standards
Identifies patient's needs as evidenced by appropriate diagnoses
Identifies subtle changes in patient condition and documents intervention
Actively participates in multidisciplinary care conferences
Performs routine equipment quality checks and troubleshoots equipment to determine problems and solutions
Maintains appropriate documentation and record keeping of supplies and equipment
Consistently performs quality control checks on all equipment as appropriate
Documents patient observations/care appropriately in the computer, on the flow sheets, or wherever appropriate.
Effectively utilizes the computer to transcribe orders or request printouts
Required Qualifications:
Understanding of medical terminology, infectious control techniques and age related acuity levels
Must be competent in collecting and interpreting data about the patient's status in order to identify each patient's age specific needs
Able to evaluate and document the patient/family response to care
Knowledge of medical terminology, infectious control techniques and age related acuity levels
Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English
Certification as an Orthoptist by American Orthoptist Council or an Orthoptic Bachelors in Medical Science
Ability to maintain flexibility and work well in a constantly changing environment
Licenses and Certifications:
Basic Life Support(Required)
Preferred Qualifications:
Bilingual skills in English and Spanish and/or Vietnamese
Five years of training or experience in orthoptic techniques
Working knowledge of Title 22 and JCAHO standards
Ability to instruct others in the use of equipment and performance of procedures
