Norton Healthcare is a Community Health System located in Louisville, KY comprised of 5 acute care hospitals as well as our network of primary care and specialty physician offices including Norton Cancer Institute. Residents develop knowledge, skills and competence in a broad range of pharmaceutical services for diverse patient populations with the health system providing a robust and comprehensive training environments for various aspects of the residency program. Pharmacies located in each of the acute care hospitals, the community and specialty pharmacies, and pharmacists embedded in clinics each offer a unique facet to the customized training plan for residents.
Norton Hospitals PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program builds on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
In addition to the PGY1 program, three PGY2 programs in Ambulatory Care, Infectious Diseases and Oncology build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.
