PGY2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration & Leadership Residency combined with PGY1 and MHA 2 year program
Program Overview
The HSPAL program at University of Utah Health develops clinically strong practitioners who choose to specialize in pharmacy administration roles, and become leaders in the profession. The PGY1 program provides a strong practice foundation with emphasis on clinical skill development. The PGY2 HSPAL program provides a broad experience in the management of pharmacy services in an academic medical center including inpatient and ambulatory programs, as well as foundational skills in human resources, leadership, technology and informatics, operational management, finance, compliance, medication safety and quality. The MHA program provides for the solid academic foundation to support the rotational experiences. Graduates of the program will be capable of assuming roles as clinical coordinators, team leaders, pharmacy supervisors or managers in a variety of pharmacy practice settings, including academic medical centers. These are the leaders that will be ultimately assuming senior pharmacy leader and director of pharmacy positions.
Program Purpose
Our PGY1 pharmacy residency program builds on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.
