Pharmacy Informatics
Session:
Tuesday AM
Purpose: PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice setting. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.
Description: The PGY2 Pharmacy Informatics Residency at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC) is a hospital based, 12 month residency program which combines clinical, managerial, and project management experiences involving pharmacy informatics. The core objective of the program is to provide intensive training in clinical informatics, automation and technology, interdisciplinary collaboration, and clinical decision support as it relates to the medication-use system. At the conclusion of the program, residents will be well prepared to assume crucial roles in pharmacy informatics leadership, management and interdisciplinary teams.

In addition, there will be one major longitudinal project for which the Pharmacy Informatics resident will be responsible for all aspects of the project. This project will be presented at the Great Lakes Pharmacy Residency Conference and potentially at Epic’s Spring Pharmacy Advisory Council. The resident will also have the opportunity to attend ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting.
At the conclusion of the program, the resident will be prepared to assume central roles in pharmacy leadership, information technology management and interdisciplinary teams. Knowledge and experience gained during the residency is designed to be portable and broadly applicable regardless of technology platform.
Preceptors:
Simon Bae, PharmD Clinical Applications Pharmacist
Andy Black, MISM, RPh Assistant Director, Pharmacy Informatics
Keith Young, PharmD, MS Clinical Applications Pharmacist
Duration:
12 months total
Rotation Months: The resident will complete a combination of four to five week rotations and longitudinal experiences designed around the resident’s interest and available projects.
Upcoming Pharmacy Initiatives:
EMR version upgrade – implementation and post-live support
EMR camera implementation for sterile product compounding
EMR extension to community hospitals
Major Project: There will be at least one major longitudinal project for which the Pharmacy Informatics resident will be responsible. This project will be presented at the Great Lakes Pharmacy Residency Conference in April/May and potentially at Epic’s Expert Group Meeting (XGM). The resident will be responsible for all aspects of the research project including: project development, IRB proposal, data collection and analysis, presentation of the data, and manuscript writing.
Abstract: During the residency at least one abstract will be submitted for presentation at a major meeting (AMIA, ASHP, Epic, HIMSS, UHC, etc.). The submission of an abstract is required for presentation at the Great Lakes Pharmacy Residency Conference.
Manuscript: Residents are required to devise, implement and assess a major project involving the information systems related to the medication use process. One manuscript will be written and submitted for publication during the course of the year.
Presentations: Effective communication skills are emphasized during this residency. The resident is required to complete at least one professional presentation to clinical pharmacy practitioners during the pharmacy informatics residency. This may include pharmacy continuing education, end user development and/or the Epic’s Expert Group Meeting (XGM). This requirement is in addition to the project presentation at the Great Lakes Pharmacy Residency Conference.
Evaluations: The Pharmacy Informatics resident and preceptor(s) will fill out monthly evaluations in PharmAcademic. In addition, the Residency Program Director will complete quarterly and elective evaluations to be discussed with the resident. Evaluations are used to determine progression through the residency goals and objectives. The resident will receive a PGY2 Pharmacy Informatics Certificate upon completion of the program as determined by preceptors, the Residency Program Director and the Senior Director of Pharmacy.
Teaching: The PGY2 resident will serve as a preceptor for Doctor of Pharmacy students enrolled at The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy. There will be opportunities to lead student group discussions and/or participate in journal clubs. The resident will teach to Master’s students on the subject of pharmacy informatics. At the discretion of the Residency Program Director, a Teaching Certificate is available.
Staffing: The staffing responsibilities include approximately one out of every 3 weekends (20 weekends/year) practicing as a licensed Ohio pharmacist at the medical center. The staffing component allows the informatics resident ongoing experience with the information systems and technologies supported by the Pharmacy Informatics Team. Training weekend(s) will not count towards the total weekend commitment.
