TITLE AND LOCATION Instructional Media Specialist, Center for Farm Financial Management. Twelve-month recurring appointment. Located in the Department of Applied Economics, St. Paul Campus, University of Minnesota.
PROGRAM / UNIT DESCRIPTION The Center for Farm Financial Management (CFFM) provides educational programs and software tools that are practical, timely, and applicable to real-world farm situations. Products and training focus on farm financial planning, financial analysis, risk management, business planning, commodity marketing, and credit analysis. CFFM products are widely used by farmers, lenders and educators across the United States. CFFM is an entrepreneurial unit with major support from software sales and grants.
CFFM also provides leadership to several national programs funded by USDA/NIFA including Extension Risk Management Education and the Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development program. CFFM supports the online presence of these programs through development and maintenance of FarmAnswers.org, AgRisk.umn.edu, ExtensionRME.org, FINBIN.umn.edu, and RVS.umn.edu. CFFM has also developed several online tools including AgPlan, AgTransitions, FairRent, Commodity Challenge, and a large quantity of accompanying online training courses. CFFM has a long history of working with historically underserved farmers and ranchers, and work with these communities continues to increase.
The Results Verification System (RVS) was developed by CFFM to help organizations accept and manage grant applications and subsequent reports. Due to increased demand for RVS, CFFM will be developing more training resources for RVS.
CFFM is located in Ruttan Hall on the St. Paul Campus of the University of Minnesota. It is a unit in the Department of Applied Economics. It is also a part of the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences and University of Minnesota Extension. CFFM is currently a hybrid workplace. After a probationary period, CFFM team members work in the office part of the week and are allowed to work remotely the remainder of the time.
RESPONSIBILITIES The person in this position will work as part of a vibrant team at CFFM to design, develop, implement and deliver training curricula and provide insights that drive program decisions, reporting, innovation and improvements for CFFM projects. Specifically the person in this position will:
Training and Design (60%)
Help the CFFM team further develop and improve online training resources including videos, online courses, webinars and podcasts.
Develop and deliver training and demos for users of the Results Verification System (RVS).
Design and maintain user guides for RVS.
Provide technical assistance to RVS users.
Work with the CFFM team and external partners to identify meaningful administrative metrics and reports from RVS.
Identify and recommend appropriate platforms and approaches to use for virtual training.
Help develop training that addresses the unique needs of historically underserved audiences.
Digital Media (20%)
Produce and edit internally produced training videos on a wide variety of topics for audiences that include educators, lenders, farmers, and historically underserved communities.
Upload, catalog, and oversee management of video assets on internal servers and external video hosting platforms.
Embed videos with content management system for production of online training courses.
Maintain and communicate industry standards related to video technology, user experience, content interaction, and accessibility.
Help develop communication and promotion plans for CFFM products, programs, and events.
Identify and develop innovative approaches to increase awareness and use of CFFM products, programs and events.
Work with CFFM team to create new and unique approaches to engage new and existing audiences through online content.
Bachelor’s degree in agricultural communications and marketing, instructional design or a similar discipline, or a combination of related education and work experience to equal at least four years by the appointment start date.
Strong initiative and ability to work well both collaboratively and independently.
Demonstrated ability to prioritize workload and complete projects on time.
Demonstrated written and oral communication skills for professional and nonprofessional audiences.
Applicants must be able to pass a background check.
Experience and education in educational media design, developing, producing and delivering virtual training, video and audio content (podcasts).
Demonstrated experience in writing technical materials, such as instructional manuals or technical reports
Adult training and facilitation skills, including developing and delivering training, tools, and other capacity building resources (in-person and virtual).
Familiarity with federally funded programs and reporting requirements.
Demonstrated success in working as part of productive, high-energy, outcome-oriented teams.
Evidence of potential to work effectively with project partners.
Good organizational skills including accuracy, consistency, and attention to detail.
