PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Overview
Purpose: PGY1 pharmacy residency programs built on pharmacy education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification (BCPS), and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
Emphasis will be placed on evidence-based medication management, communication, lifelong learning, leadership and patient safety in the unique setting of a children’s hospital (Rotations will be primarily at the Akron campus but with opportunities at the Mahoning Valley campus as well).
Assist with precepting pharmacy students from Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED)
Staffing component on alternating weekends and one evening twice a month including coverage of one major and one minor holiday.

Prepare for a specialty residency or for a general hospital position within a pediatric setting
Emergency Medicine (Akron and Mahoning Valley for a total of 5 weeks)
General Pediatrics (4 weeks)
Hematology/Oncology (4 weeks)
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (Akron, 4 weeks)
Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (4 weeks)
Electives (Two 4-week rotations)
Longitudinal Core Rotations:
Medication Safety/Pharmacy Administration (combined longitudinal experiences for 7 scheduled weeks throughout the year)
NEOMED Teaching Certificate – Track 2 (12 months)
Pharmacy Staffing (12 months)
Research (12 months)

The director and preceptors recognize the importance of tailoring the experiences to the resident’s personal career goals. Potential elective rotations include:
Advanced Clinical Staffing
Bone Marrow Transport
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (at Aultman in Canton or Saint Elizabeth’s Medical Office Building of Boardman)
Pharmacy Management/Leadership
Residents may also choose to repeat a core rotation for additional experience
Longitudinal Activities:
BLS (Basic Life Support) and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support, optional)

Applications
Requirements for application include a Pharm.D. from an ACPE accredited college of pharmacy or equivalent experience and Ohio licensure by October 1st, 2023.
