The College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University, Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center and Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine, offers a program in Food Animal Medicine and Surgery.Â Â The program emphasizes management of all ages of animals and classes of production within the purview of the internship. Graduates should be well prepared for clinical academic appointments or for specialty practices.
This 1-year internship program will consist primarily of food animal and camelid animal clinical, with some didactic and clinical training. Â Supplemental training may be acquired through elective rotations.Â The primary responsibilities and opportunities afforded by the internship program involve providing care to food animal and camelid patients through the food animal hospital.Â Â The intern will actively participate in patient assessment, treatment, monitoring and care, and record keeping.Â The intern will operate under the supervision of LVMC faculty but is expected to demonstrate initiative and independence in the performance of their duties.Â
The clinical program in food animal and camelid medicine and surgery is designed to provide advanced clinical training on individual animal and herd-based diseases, experience in clinical teaching, exposure to research techniques and the opportunity to conduct clinically oriented research.
This program will prepare the intern as an excellent candidate for a food animal specialty residency or a private practice clinician.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
- DVM or equivalent. - Registration with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy in compliance with the Controlled Substances Registration Act will be required prior to clinical practice. - Licensure by the State of Iowa Board of Veterinary Medicine upon employment start date. Â
