Internal Medicine Pharmacy
PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.
Specific Strengths of this Residency Program:
This residency will provide opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care that improves medication therapy for Veteran patients.
Clinical education and advanced training in internal medicine will occur in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Residents will gain clinical skills and knowledge in pharmacotherapy, pharmacokinetics, and the pathophysiology of core Internal Medicine disease states.
Rotations include six months of rounding on VA Internal Medicine multidisciplinary medical teams providing comprehensive pharmaceutical care.
Internal medicine rotations opportunities exist for both teaching and non-teaching services
Additional required rotations include ambulatory care, critical care, and medication safety to cover the entire continuum of care
Additional longitudinal experiences that are required are administration/management, and year long quality improvement/research project
Elective academic experiences (longitudinal, immersion, and precepting) that will be in conjunction with Butler University
About Veteran Health Indiana - Roudebush VA Medical Center
Since 1932, the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center, located two miles northwest of the heart of downtown Indianapolis, has been improving the health of the men and women who have so proudly served our nation. As Indiana’s tertiary care facility, Indianapolis VA Medical Center receives referrals from VA facilities at Ft. Wayne and Marion, Indiana, and from nearby Danville, Illinois. Indianapolis VAMC provides acute inpatient medical, surgical, psychiatric, neurological, and rehabilitation care, as well as both primary and specialized outpatient services. Some noteworthy specialized services include comprehensive cardiac care, radiation oncology treatment and community based extended care. The facility is aggressively utilizing emerging technology in the tele-home care and tele-disease management arenas. The medical center was selected as the site for the Veterans in Partnership VISN 11 Polytrauma Level 2 Center and is currently providing ongoing support to the returning veterans from Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation New Dawn (OEF/OIF/OND). Additionally, the medical center has a 50-bed Domiciliary Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program targ...eting homeless veterans.
The medical center operates four Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC’s) located in Bloomington, Terre Haute, Martinsville, and Edinburgh. The more than 60,000 veteran patients (3,700 women) treated by the Indianapolis VA Medical Center require over 613,000 outpatient visits and over 7,900 inpatient episodes of care yearly.
