Summary of Position: The Researcher 1 will provide critical support for the laboratory by assisting with cell biology and biochemistry experiments and analyzing data. They will be responsible for cell maintenance, performing routine molecular biology experiments, protein analysis, organizing stored materials (plasmids and strains) as well as contribute to general laboratory maintenance.
Essential and other functions: 70% Conduct Experiments (essential) Carry out various laboratory procedures and experiments that involve standard molecular biology techniques, including site-directed mutagenesis, SDS gel electrophoresis and western blotting. Generate strains of social amoeba, perform transformations and conduct a variety of phenotypic assays measuring cellular functions such as chemotaxis, adhesion, multicellular development. Perform high resolution imaging of cells and quantitative image analysis.
10% Record and Analyze Data (essential) Record results, both manually and using custom image analysis software; analyze motility parameters using custom software as well as analyze DNA and protein sequences using Lasergene software. Prepare weekly summaries of results in PowerPoint presentations, summarizing results in charts and simple picture galleries.
10% Operate Lab Equipment (essential) Operate routine lab equipment such as balances, pH meters, Coulter counter, centrifuges, thermal cycler and electroporator. Collect images using phase/DIC microscope and spinning disc confocal microscope.
5% Laboratory Organization (secondary) Store critical laboratory reagents, re-organize stocks in freezers and update computer logs, databases and protocols.
5% Prepare Reagents (secondary Prepare standard solutions or media according to prescribed formula.

Required qualifications: BA or BS in basic science (biology, microbiology or biochemistry only), or coursework in cell biology, molecular biology, chemistry, biochemistry, biochemistry and/or chemistry lab, tissue culture, protein engineering and microbiology, and a minimum of two semesters of independent research experience (beyond standard lab courses) that includes performing cell-based assays and data analysis; or a combined education and experience must equal at least four years.
Preferred qualifications: Experienced in quantitative light microscopy and programming with R, MatLab or equivalent and/or microfluidics. Familiarity with or experience in molecular biology techniques (cloning, Gibson Assembly, Golden Gate Assembly), cell culture and protein expression and analysis.
