The Pharmacy Technician position is located in Pharmacy Service, Memphis VA Medical Center, Memphis, TN. This position provides support to Inpatient, Outpatient and Telephone Care Pharmacy. Pharmacy Technicians perform routine pharmacy functions including receiving prescriptions from patients in writing or electronically from physicians. Pharmacy Technicians assists in other patient care areas as deemed necessary to maintain the consistency of overall pharmacy services. The duties of the position include, but are not limited to the below: Reads and interprets prescriptions (including investigational products), stock orders, and medication related orders, obtains proper medication or material in the proper strength and dosage form; determines proper amount and counts, pours, or measures the medications; affixes proper label; and records required data on Pharmacy's copy of prescription/order. Inventories and replenishes emergency carts, stock areas, and automated devices without a second review. Operates and maintains complex computerized pharmacy automation and technical equipment/devices. Compounds and/or reconstitutes oral or external medications (non-sterile) without a second review. Handles parenteral pharmaceuticals according to standard best practices. Works independently to prepare IV admixture solutions for direct patient administration, meeting the standards of environmental control and aseptic technique. Answers questions from pharmacy and non-pharmacy personnel regarding drug distribution. Provides customer service to staff and patients via telephone to include refill questions, identification of medications by description, and determining the status of prescriptions being filled by the Consolidated Mailout Pharmacy. Maintains, verifies, stocks, and replaces medication outdates in patient care areas in manual fill and automated fill devices. Monitors inventory needs in Pharmacy work area and relays this information to the Procurement Pharmacy Technician. Acts as the initial point of contact for the Telephone Care Service within Pharmacy Service. Evaluates Veteran patients' inquiries/concerns related to drug therapy. Provides Veteran patient education via telephone regarding the medication refill process, the use of the automated telephone system, My HealtheVet including use of this internet refill system and general information on Veteran patient pharmacies at VAMC Memphis. Interacts with the VAMC Memphis Veteran Patient Care Advocates and Customer Service Ambassadors as appropriate using pharmacy knowledge and skill sets (technical and clinical) to resolve Veteran patient issues. Utilizes AudioFAX telephone refill/renewal and My HealtheVet internet refill systems routinely to assure continuous operation. Follows through on all Veteran patient related prescription problems, utilizing direct telephone contact and/or CPRS progress note to the provider to assure uninterrupted and appropriate drug therapy.
