Bioinformatics and Data Science Services (BxDx) is a large and growing team at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI). Residing within the department of Informatics and Analytics (I&A), the BxDx team addresses unmet needs for bioinformatics, data management, and data science services across research, clinical, and operational units. The team accelerates the use of bioinformatics and data science methods, data, and tools within DFCI and bridges the gap between research and clinical practice by helping design and implement operational solutions. The Biomedical Informatics Analyst will collect, curate, integrate, and analyze biomedical data to provide actionable information to BxDx clients including Pediatric Oncology. The Analyst has access to an extraordinary range of healthcare and research data, including medical and pharmacy records (Epic, Aria and internal systems), scheduling, billing, referral, and results of laboratory and molecular tests. Using these data, the Analyst provides analysis and reporting in areas such as research, operational, quality measurement, trend management, utilization, patient information, and outcomes.
The Biomedical Informatics Analyst will develop an in-depth understanding of the data structures and analysis workflows within the client department as well as the ability to translate specifications into programming logic and algorithms, visualizations and reports. In addition, the Analyst must have excellent communication skills and ability to engage and educate clients and other analysts within the community. The Analyst will be expected to support new projects, function independently within a fast-paced environment, work on several different projects/tasks concurrently and coordinate the effort with other I&A groups as needed.  Assignments will include data collection, harmonization, and complex data analysis projects that can be multi-disciplinary. The Analyst will collaborate with the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) and Clinical Operations and Business Analytics (COBA) teams to address data requirements and build data architecture to support robust analytics reporting. The Analyst will work with a variety of tools (e.g., SAS, SQL, Excel, Oracle, Tableau, R, Python and/or Java) to access data, write queries, develop programming logic and algorithms, run reports, and manipulate and analyze large datasets to meet DFCI needs. - Collaborate and coordinate efforts with I&A’s Enterprise Data Warehouse and Clinical Operations & Business Analytics teams to ensure consistency of analytics process and proper data access and stewardship, as well as with other I&A and Pediatrics groups, as appropriate for support and implementation of analytics across teams.
- Utilize business intelligence tools to create reports and dashboards that can be used for research analytics and that can be operationalized as necessary.
- Serve as a technical expert for compiling, cleaning, manipulating, and analyzing data related to assigned projects.
- Write and develop complex, iterative and multi-part reports and prepare summaries of important points.
- Must be comfortable documenting project and data requirements, reporting, analytics, and visualization processes.
- Build and foster an institute-wide analytic community of practice by training, educating and bringing together analysts, data stewards, business stewards and analytics consumers.
- Perform other similar and related duties as required or directed.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree or equivalent in Statistics, Computer Science, Information Technology, Mathematics, Bioinformatics, or a related field.
- Minimum of one year of relevant work experience in a biomedical research or a healthcare environment. Experience in neuro-oncology, pediatric oncology, or a related cancer field is a plus.
- Must be able to function independently as well as in team settings in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple priorities.
- Must have superior interpersonal and communication skills to work and communicate effectively with all levels of internal and external staff.
- Requires superior computer skills, i.e. MS Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Word and data mining techniques.
- Experience developing reports with a business intelligence tool such as Tableau.
- Programming abilities, statistical training, and software skills (e.g. SAS, R, Python) are required.
ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Technical Skills: - Knowledge of data storage platforms including Microsoft SQL, Excel, and Access
- Experience in SQL server, MySQL or Oracle; able to use relational databases and program independently in at least one system
- Comfortable with manipulating data, extracting desired information perform data analysis and troubleshooting data integrity issues
- Prior experience with a business intelligence tool, such as Tableau, QlikView, or Microstrategy
- Experience in statistical analysis in at least one programming language including SAS, R, Stata or other
- Comfortable using a programming language to manipulate and analyze biomedical data. Must be able to develop coding and table templates for preparing, processing and analyzing data
- Comfortable learning new software tools
- Competent with Microsoft Office tools (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Visio, Sharepoint, Teams, etc.)
