PGY1 Community-based Pharmacy Resident

The mission of the Walgreens Northeastern University (NEU) Community Pharmacy Residency Program is to develop well-rounded, confident, and innovative community pharmacy practitioners who will advance the profession by providing superior patient care in a financially sustainable manner. To build upon the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop community-based pharmacist practitioners with diverse patient care, leadership, and education skills who are eligible to pursue advanced training opportunities including PGY-2 residencies and professional certifications.

The residency program is based at the URAC Accredited Walgreens Community-Based Specialty Pharmacy located in the heart of the Longwood Medical Area in Boston, Massachusetts. This premier pharmacy location offers a variety of clinical pharmacy services for patients who are prescribed complex therapies.

The resident will:

Participate in unique and innovative models of practice that continue to push healthcare forward

• Focus strongly on inter-professional collaboration and professional leadership
• Engage in transitions of care and specialty disease state management activities
• Gain knowledge in HIV, Hepatitis C, oncology, mental health, diabetes and epilepsy

Residency Activities

Patient care services:

• Collaborate with the hospital staff to assist in reducing expenses associated with readmissions
• Provide medication management and counseling services
• Improve patient adherence to medication therapy and improve health outcomes
• Working in a team-based practice model to help treat patients with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD)
• Support patients with chronic conditions that require utilizing limited distribution drugs (LDD)
• Provide additional health and wellness services including but not limited to MTM, immunizations, and blood pressure screenings

Academic Pursuits:

• Facilitate and lead learning activities for student pharmacists in campus-based classrooms and laboratories
• Serve as preceptor for IPPE, Co-Op, and APPE students
• Design and lead a pharmacy-based patient care research project
• Complete residency teaching certificate program
• Participate in both student and professional organizations

 Leadership Opportunities:

• Develop skills to become an efficient clinical staff pharmacist, pharmacy manager and store manager
• Understand the complex organizational structure
• Master basic leadership skills including but not limited to problem solving, action planning, delegation, accountability, and communication with team members
• Collaborate with regional leadership on strategic planning to meet the mission and vision of the organization
