Walgreens Community-Based PGY1 Residency Programs

PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program Purpose: To build upon the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop community-based pharmacist practitioners with diverse patient care, leadership, and education skills who are eligible to pursue advanced training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies and professional certifications.

The role of the pharmacist is ever changing in our complex health care system. Advanced training through a residency program prepares a pharmacist to provide compassionate patient care for the members of their community, achieve professional goals, and become a leader within the profession while contributing to the advancement of health care.

While each residency program at Walgreens is unique, examples of activities that a resident participates in over the course of the residency program year could include:

Patient Care

• Delivering medication management services, providing disease-state management services, administering immunizations, assisting patients through transitions of care, providing health and wellness programs
• Participating in the patient-centered dispensing process

 Leadership and Management

• Managing operations and services of community pharmacy practice
• Developing personal and professional leadership skills.
• Participating in community outreach activities and professional pharmacy advocacy initiatives

 Advancing Practice and Improving Patient Care

• Conducting practice-based research
• Developing and implementing clinical services
• Leading management projects focused on quality improvement and business development

 Teaching, Education and Dissemination of Knowledge

• Presenting educational training and lectures to students, patients, and health care providers
• Serving as a preceptor to students and participating in other teaching opportunities
