PGY1 Program PurposePGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training. Residency GoalThe goal of the ASHP-Accredited PGY-1 pharmacy residency at the Stratton VAMC is to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue rational drug therapy and provide pharmaceutical care in a multi-disciplinary healthcare setting. The residency program offers resident exposure into multiple settings, but largely focuses on providing ambulatory care services. Overview

The Stratton VA Medical Center has eleven community based outpatient clinics (CBOCs) in Bainbridge, Catskill, Clifton Park, Fonda, Glens Falls, Kingston, Plattsburgh, Saranac Lake, Schenectady, Troy, and Westport, New York. These clinics offer residents the opportunity to work with a vast array of patient populations including rural, urban, and geographically isolated patients. There is also a Community Living Center located within the medical center providing long term care for elderly and disabled veterans. Residents have the opportunity to take on a panel of long term care patients whom they follow throughout the year. The Stratton VA is affiliated with Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, which offers an optional Teaching and Learning Program. This program allows residents to prepare a lecture for a course at the college and obtain a Teaching and Learning certificate. The Albany Stratton VA Medical Center is located in Albany, NY, the Capital of New York State. Albany is less than a 3 hour drive or train ride from Boston, MA to the east and New York City to the south. Albany is bordered by the Hudson Valley region, the Adirondack mountains, and the Berkshire mountains. This unique location boasts a variety of cultural, historical, and outdoor activities close by.
