PGY2 Pharmacy Cardiology Residency

PGY2 Cardiology pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification.

UMMMC is equipped with three cardiac catheterization suites providing 24-hour services with an annual caseload of more than 3,000 patients. The hospital has a 16-bed Cardiac Intensive Care Unit for surgical and medical patients and manages more than 1,500 patients in the outpatient Anticoagulation Clinic. Additionally, in 2018 UMMMC expanded its advanced heart failure services to include a ventricular assist device (VAD) program.

The residents will have the opportunity to participate in rotations in the cardiac intensive care unit, medical intensive care unit, acute care cardiology units, heart failure stepdown unit, and anticoagulation consult service rotations in addition to elective opportunities. Residents will also be expected to participate in a longitudinal ambulatory heart failure clinic rotation throughout the course of the year. The residents will have the opportunity to develop and refine their presentation skills through formal research presentations, case conferences, journal club presentations, and cardiology fellows conference. Residents will present their research at a minimum of one specialty conference and one regional conference during the residency year. Residents will also gain teaching experience and precepting experience by serving as co-preceptors for students and PGY1 residents.

All residents participate in an in-house, on-call program and are trained to provide clinical services, including participation in the management of medical emergencies (Code Blue, Stroke, Level 1 and Level 2 traumas) during these on-call shifts.
