PGY1 Community-Based Residency Program

The Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Pharmacy Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program is dedicated to preparing advanced innovative community-based pharmacist practitioners who are committed to patient care and improving knowledge through education. 

The PGY1 Community-Based Residency Program with the VCU School of Pharmacy, is an ASHP-APhA accredited one-year (PGY-1) residency program that emphasizes community-based care and providing care to patients where they are in the community.  Additional emphasis is on practice innovation, along with design and implementation of patient care in community-based practice settings.  The resident will have sufficient exposure to community-based pharmacies and pharmacists already engaging in innovative practices, yet will have ample opportunity to assist in the design and implementation of new or improved patient care services. Another core experience is development of leadership skills and community service opportunities. In addition to direct patient care experiences, the resident will also gain experience in activities that will prepare them for roles as clinician educators upon completion of the residency. Furthermore, development of basic skills in practice-based research will be a component of the residency experience. 

The VCU School of Pharmacy has been involved with Community-Based Pharmacy Residency training for over 20 years.  The program was one of the first multi-site community-based pharmacy residencies accredited by ASHP and APhA in the country. 

The VCU Community-Based Residency Program has six positions available for 2021-22 The practices site affiliations are with Bremo Pharmacy, (Richmond, Virginia),  Buford Road Pharmacy, (Richmond, Virginia),  Kroger Pharmacy (Richmond and Roanoke, Virginia) and Publix Pharmacy (Richmond, Virginia)
