The Department of Pharmacy Services at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia offers a one-year post-graduate year 2 (PGY2) Pediatric Pharmacy Residency.
The purpose of the PGY2 Pediatric Pharmacy Residency at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia is to build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in pediatrics. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification (BCPPS).
Pharmacists completing this residency will master the principles of pediatric pharmacotherapy and be competent and confident pediatric practitioners capable of providing direct patient care in various pediatric subspecialties. They will understand the principles of a sound pediatric pharmacy operational system and be able to integrate these principles into their clinical practice.
These pharmacists will be skilled in educating other healthcare professionals, patients, and the community on pediatric medication-related issues and will be capable of conducting basic clinical research to answer medication-related questions in the pediatric population. They will demonstrate professional maturity by following a personal philosophy of practice, monitoring their own performance, exhibiting commitment to the profession, and exercising leadership in improving the safety of the medication use system.
To facilitate the goals of the residency program the resident will complete the following required learning experiences: Hospital Pharmacy (Orientation/Onboarding/Training), Drug Information, On-Call, Medication Safety / Regulatory Compliance, Acute Care, Cardiac Intensive Care, Neonatal/Infant Intensive Care, Pediatric Intensive Care, Oncology, and Solid Organ Transplantation. Elective learning experiences include: Acute Care II, Infectious Diseases, Informatics, Oncology II, and development of experiences in areas specific to the resident's interest.
The PGY2 Pediatric Pharmacy resident will also be required to complete at least 1 longitudinal patient care focused learning experience over the course of the residency year, including options in Cardiac Anticoagulation Immersion Program, Endocrinology Clinic, and Solid Organ Transplant Clinic, though others may be developed based on the resident's interest and preceptor availability.
Additional requirements of the PGY2 Pediatric Pharmacy resident include activities pertaining to, or exercises in drug use evaluations, formulary management, reporting of medication safety events or adverse drug reactions, case presentations, journal clubs, educational presentation, student precepting / didactic teaching, participation in multidisciplinary committees, recruitment activities and research.
The resident provides a service commitment to the hospital in the form of on-call service (alternating clinical and administrative) every third weekend.
The resident will attend the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting in December and an associated specialty meeting (e.g. PPAG) in the spring of their residency year. The resident is also encouraged to attend local pharmacy meetings as well.
