PGY-2 Psychiatric Pharmacy Residency

PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to con-tribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to func-tion independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accu-mulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provi-sion of patient care that improves medication therapy. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency should possess competencies that qualify them for clinical pharmacist and/or faculty positions and position them to be eligible for attainment of board certification in the specialized practice area (when board certification for the practice area exists).

The purpose of our specialty residency is to prepare the resident for practice in inpatient and outpatient settings, substance abuse, and post-traumatic stress disorder involving psychiatric pharmacotherapy while taking care of the patient in a holistic manner. The resident is also offered the opportunity to obtain a teaching certificate through the Rosalind Franklin University College of Pharmacy, precept pharmacy students, and will participate in didactic teaching. This PGY2 residency program will guide the resident in developing accountability, practice patterns, habits, and expert knowledge, skills, attitudes and abilities in Psychiatric Pharmacy. Building upon the broad-based competencies achieved in a PGY1 residency, the resident will achieve the ability to provide care in the most complex of cases or in the support of care through practice leadership. Upon completion of this residency, the resident will have the ability to function independently as a practitioner by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and transforming both into improved medication therapy for patients. A resident who successfully completes this PGY2 residency should possess competencies that enable attainment of board certification in psychiatric pharmacy (BCPP).
