The PGY1 pharmacy residency programs are designed to develop self-directed practitioners who are prepared to assume advanced practice in an acute care environment, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training. The PGY2 program build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge, and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice The resident will acquire or enhance current pharmaceutical care, leadership and administrative skills. Residents will function as effective members of the health care team with the ultimate goal of providing optimal pharmaceutical care to patients. Residents will demonstrate time management and independent thinking skills that will make them leaders within their practice settings and within the profession. You also have opportunities to spend time in providing ambulatory care. Your program is customized, and direct patient care, professional development, and leadership are emphasized. Ascension St. Joseph PGY1 Pharmacy Residents gain experience in drug policy, administration and direct patient care and customize their residency by choosing elective experiences based on individual needs and interests. This program offers two tracks - acute care and ambulatory care. - Ambulatory care: chronic disease management, anticoagulation, virtual pharmacy services
- Critical care: 24 bed ICU
- Emergency medicine: One of the busiest emergency departments in Wisconsin
- Drug-use policy: Medication use evaluation, formulary evaluation and management, drug information, development of clinical policies and procedures, drug policy, medication safety and investigational drug service
- Medicine: Infectious diseases, internal medicine, medical residency teaching rounds
- NICU/Women's Health: Level III unit, well known service in Wisconsin
- Oncology: outpatient oncology services,
- Practice management/administration: Budgeting, personnel management, financial management, development and implementation of services
- Orientation: Computer systems, drug distribution, personnel, policies, patient care, work flow and department structures
- Clinical teaching: Precepting pharmacy students, teaching certificate option
- Professional development: Year-long residency project, learning experience projects, in-services, staffing, visits to other institutions, professional organizations, teaching and precepting, ACPE continuing education presentations, interviewing/recruiting, medication safety experiences, preparations for accreditation and more

Ascension Columbia St. Mary's/Ascension WI PGY1/PGY2 HSPA-L Combined Residency Program The PGY1 & PGY2 Combined Health-System Pharmacy Administration & Leadership residency program prepares you to be a future leader of an integrated health system. The PGY1 Pharmacy – Ascension Columbia St. Mary's residency is combined with the PGY2 Health System Pharmacy Administration & Leadership residency for a two-year program that provides a solid clinical foundation and experience across the entirety of pharmacy services as part of the pharmacy leadership team. Ascension Columbia St. Mary's PGY1 program has similar rotations as outlined above in the Ascension St. Joseph program. Candidates interested in a career as a clinical coordinator, supervisor, manager or director in an integrated healthcare organization are encouraged to apply. During the PGY2 year, the format of the residency is tailored to the interest, experience, aptitude and career goals of the resident, including: - Health system pharmacy leadership: Human resources, strategic planning, communication skills, accreditation, continuity of care, resource management, interfaces with medical staff and administration, corporate interfaces, managing issues and problems
- Finance: Financial management, productivity, variances, budgeting, capital budgeting
- Ambulatory care management: Ambulatory clinical services, medication therapy management and reimbursement, business plan and return on investment, hospital discharge and clinic prescription services, customer service and performance improvement
- Clinical services (includes drug use policy and medication safety): Planning and management of clinical pharmacy services, including daily practice of pharmacists, medication safety initiatives, drug use policy decisions, P&T Committee operations, medication management regulatory compliance
- Retail pharmacy administration: Retail pharmacy operations, caregiver engagement, patient experience, financial performance and performance improvement
- Hospital pharmacy operations: Direct experience in the daily supervision of pharmacy operations including workflow, personnel management, problem solving and performance improvement
- Pharmacy informatics: Inpatient and ambulatory computer systems, project management, change management, database and application management, clinical documentation, billing systems and clinical/operational decision support
- Pharmacy supply chain: Procurement, inventory management, contracting, market share rebates, negotiation, philanthropy, contract compliance, distributor relationships and vendor relationships
- Orientation: Computer systems, drug distribution, personnel, policies, workflow and department structure
- Professional development: Year-long residency project, learning experience projects, in-services, staffing, professional organizations, teaching and precepting, current topic discussions, leadership development
