Emory University Hospital Midtown is a renowned 531 bed acute patient care facility and treats 17,000 patients per year at the outpatient Winship Cancer Institute located in Atlanta, Georgia as part of Emory Healthcare.

Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership Residency Program:

(HSPAL PGY2 number of positions: 1)

The Department of Pharmacy at Emory University Hospital Midtown is excited to now offer a PGY2 Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL) residency program, the first and only PGY2 HSPAL program in Georgia! The residency program provides comprehensive practice management and leadership experiences with a diverse pharmacy leadership team with residency and practice experience from leading institutions. The program allows for tailored instruction for the individual resident based on interest(s), past experience, and future goals. The 12 month PGY2 Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership residency program will develop pharmacy leaders with expert knowledge and skills necessary to assume clinical, operational, and leadership management positions within a health system pharmacy.

A majority of experiences will be at Emory University Hospital Midtown facilities, including the main hospital and several ambulatory locations including infusion clinics, specialty and retail pharmacies throughout the metro Atlanta area. In addition, residents will have the opportunity to complete rotations at other Emory Healthcare or external sites that are not offered at Emory University Hospital Midtown. Rotation schedules are flexible and designed to provide residents with a solid foundation of core experiences with ample opportunity for pursuing individual interests. Each resident is assigned a residency advisor to guide them through the program, as well as to ensure that the goals of both the resident and program are being met. Residents develop a customized training plan at the beginning of the year. PharmAcademic is utilized to analyze the resident's performance, which includes global evaluations conducted with the advisor and program director throughout the year.

The HSPAL program formulates its goals according to the ASHP Outcomes, Goals and Objectives required for HSPAL programs. The program incorporates all the required Outcomes, Goals and Objectives. Other elective outcomes may be addressed as part of the resident's custom plan. The summary of the Outcomes, Goals and Objectives selected for the year are included as a print out from PharmAcademic for each resident as part of the process of planning for the year and mapped to each rotation. The PGY2 Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership residency program of Emory University Hospital Midtown utilizes the collective assets of the Emory Hospitals to train and educate residents in contemporary pharmacy practice in an organized health-care system to achieve the following outcomes:

• Design, implement, and manage a safe and effective medication-use system
• Apply contemporary quality methodology to the management of pharmacy services.
• Lead and manage the health system pharmacy’s human resources.
• Manage the health system pharmacy financial performance within the context of the broader health system.
• Leverage technology and automated systems to optimize the medication-use system.
• Demonstrate personal leadership qualities and business acumen essential to operate effectively within the health system and advance the profession of pharmacy practice.

PGY2 Infectious Diseases Residency Program:

Emory University Hospital Midtown (EUHM) and Emory University Hospital (EUH) are recruiting for our unique multi-site Infectious Diseases PGY2 residency program. This program is designed to offer learning experiences that prepare the resident for a career in any practice area of the infectious diseases pharmacy specialty, including inpatient consultation with a variety of patient populations as well as leading an antimicrobial stewardship program. The resident will serve as a leader of the system-wide antimicrobial stewardship program for Emory Healthcare, which includes 5 acute care hospitals in the Atlanta area.

The resident will grow and progress to an independent member of the healthcare team who can provide care for diverse patient populations with challenging infectious diseases. Learning experiences include rotations offered at EUH and EUHM, as well as elective rotations at other Atlanta area hospitals. EUH is a tertiary referral center where the residents will encounter patients with cystic fibrosis, immunocompromising conditions such as blood and marrow transplantation, hematological malignancies, and solid organ transplantation. At EUHM, the resident will care for medically complex patients in the following services: HIV, cardiovascular disease, end-stage renal disease, orthopedics, OB/GYN, neonatology, and ENT. The resident will also gain ambulatory care experience in medication management and adherence counseling at the Infectious Diseases clinic at EUHM. While both campuses are academic medical centers, EUHM also admits patients from community providers which will prepare the resident to practice in a variety of care settings. 

Non-clinical rotation offerings include microbiology and infection prevention/epidemiology. These rotations broaden the resident’s skills in leveraging microbiology reporting to improve antimicrobial prescribing and reporting healthcare acquired infections and antimicrobial utilization/resistance to the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN). When serving as a leader for the system-wide antimicrobial stewardship program, the resident will plan agendas, coordinate meetings, lead discussions, and present recommendations at the monthly committee meetings. The resident will have opportunities to conduct several projects throughout the year that impact patient care on the system level, while being mentored by the physician and pharmacist antimicrobial stewardship leads at each hospital.
