This position will assist in the daily care of research animals housed within the LARC facilities.
Duties include, but not limited to:
- Assist veterinarians and supervisors in performing animal clinical care, compliance/regulatory functions, process improvement, and other related tasks (medical evaluations, supportive medical treatments, procedures, surgery, anethesia, diagnostic testing, necropsy, inventory supply, outcome tracking, cost analysis, etc.) and with communication between appropriate persons/entities as a liasion (investigators, staff, vendors, etc.).
- Create, maintain, and verify proper record keeping and documentation (animal health clinical records, surgery and maintenance records, controlled drug use logs, quality assurance testing, equipment preventative maintenance, GLP records, daily activity sheets, etc.) in a regulatory environment. Create organizational and tracking documents, procedural descriptions, SOP's, perform data entry, and generate reports.
- Discuss and demonstrate proper technique and procedures by providing information as a leader, trainer, and subject matter expert to research faculty, staff, and junior technicians on assigned topics (animal handling and bio-manipulation, aseptic technique, suturing, anesthesia/analgesia, euthanasia, record-keeping, chemical/biological safety, breeding/colony maintenance, bio-protection, quarantine, sentinel programs, general LARC procedures, etc.). Create, maintain, and update training materials and informational resources (handouts, visual aids, formal and informal presentations, content for e-training and online platforms, SOP's, procedural descriptions, etc.). Apply methods to assure comprehension and understanding on training topics (performance assessments, question/answer, testing, etc.).
- Provide technical support for investigators (product research, troubleshooting, assist with surgery, dosing calculations, treatment, sample collection, necropsy, record-keeping, etc.). Perform other duties as assigned.
- Maintain proper sanitation, environment and bio-protection status of surgical support, pharmacy, necropsy, diagnostic units, and other assigned support units. Serve as back-up to other LARC staff when needed (husbandry, cage wash, admin), especially during times of low staffing or campus emergencies.
- Participate in continuing education and training to grow in knowledge of topics related to the care and husbandry of laboratory animals and to keep up to date in the field (laboratory animal medicine, laws and regulations, chemical and biological safety, environmental health and safety, controlled substance requirements, bio-manipulation techniques, etc.).
High school diploma or GED and five years of relevant animal care experience with AALAS level 3 certification; OR associate's degree in veterinary medicine; OR bachelor's degree in animal or life science and two years relevant animal care experience.
Possess a valid driver's license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University.
Ability to have direct physical contact with multiple species of animals. Willingness to participate in the Occupational Health Program for LARC employees, including receiving immunizations recommended by Occupational Health Services. Ability and willingness to participate in emergency on-call and/or after hours call-back work when assigned. Computer use and basic familiarity of software programs for word-processing, data entry, creation of presentations, record keeping, and e-mailing. Ability to follow instructions, communicate effectively with others in multiple formats, and manage multiple concurrent tasks with frequent interruptions. Ability to self-schedule and meet deadlines and maintain confidentiality. Ability to work both independently and as part of a cohesive team, contributing to a positive work environment. Ability to interact professionally with people from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and attitudes. Training of novice and experienced employees, including non-native English speakers. Ability to work in ABSL-1, -2, -3 areas as well as work with chemical hazards. Able to pay close attention to detail and perform quality record-keeping. Strong judgement and decision making skills.
Working Conditions / Demands
Very heavy work often involving heavy lifting (up to 25 pounds), repetitive motions, bending, some delicate operations (blood draws, injections, etc.). Standing up/sitting down for prolonged periods of time, ability to work wearing appropriate PPE, ability and willingness to shower in/out of animal housing rooms when required.
